The Eastern Newfoundland traveller's MapGuide was created through a collaborative process with the local people of Eastern Newfoundland and the National Geographic Society to highlight the natural, historic, and cultural assets unique to the area.
History buffs and adventurers, backpackers and foodies, birders and sightseers can discover unique destinations based on recommendations from those who know best—residents of the Eastern Newfoundland region. The Eastern Newfoundland Geotourism Project seeks to celebrate the Eastern Newfoundland region as a world-class destination, while contributing to the economic health of the region by promoting sustainable tourism.
Eastern Newfoundland residents and visitors, community organizations, tourism stakeholders and local businesses nominated sites for inclusion in the print "MapGuide". Unlike any other mapping project, a favorite local restaurant, farm, winery, hiking or biking trail, swimming hole, museum or artist gallery are samples of the type of nominations National Geographic and its project partners solicited. The map targets a variety of growing travel niches—adventure and nature tourism, cultural heritage, travel, and hospitality—and allow for residents to select the one-of-a-kind places integral to a distinctive character of place.
The map highlights great local sights; hikes and walks, Iceberg Alley, the East Coast Trail trail heads, where to see fascinating wildlife, interesting and unique dining experiences, local Newfoundland music, kayaking, remote swimming holes and great ocean tours. All combined, it is a useful tool to help you organize an itinerary that will ensure your experience in Newfoundland & Labrador is memorable.
